How to use
Take Norethindrone Acetate as it is prescribed to you by your doctor. Do not take the medication in larger quantities, or for longer than recommended. Follow all directions on your prescription label. You might need to use an additional birth control method, like condoms or a spermicide, when you first begin using Norethindrone Acetate. Any doctor or surgeon that treats you should know that you are currently taking Norethindrone Acetate and if you need certain medical tests or surgery, or have to go on bed rest, you might need to stop using Norethindrone Acetate for a short period of time.
Overdose
You should seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suspect that you have taken too much Norethindrone Acetate. Overdose symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.
Missed dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take Norethindrone Acetate at the next scheduled time. Do not take extra doses to make up for the missed dose.
Notes
While taking Norethindrone, you may feel dizzy or light-headed or actually faint when getting up from a lying or sitting position. If getting up slowly doesn't help or if this problem continues, notify your doctor.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. KEEP THIS AND ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Precautions
Norethindrone Acetate can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not use if you are pregnant and tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment. Do not use Norethindrone Acetate if you have any of the following conditions:
A history of stroke or blood clot
Circulation problems
Breast cancer
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Liver diseases
A recent incomplete miscarriage or abortion
You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using this medication. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Taking hormones can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, especially if you smoke and are older than 35. Norethindrone Acetate does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases--including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to help protect yourself from these diseases.
Drug Interactions
Some drugs can make Norethindrone Acetate less effective. Before using Norethindrone Acetate, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
Griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Grisactin)
Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane)
St. John's wort
Ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox)
A barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton)
HIV medication such as amprenavir (Agenerase), atazanavir (Reyataz), tipranavir (Aptivus), indinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Invirase), lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), ritonavir (Norvir), or nelfinavir (Viracept)
There may be other drugs that can interact with Norethindrone Acetate. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medication you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction:
Hives
Difficulty breathing
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
Sudden headache, confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with vision, speech, or balance
Pain or swelling in one or both legs
Migraine headache
Swollen hands or feet, rapid weight gain
Symptoms of depression (insomnia, weakness, mood swings)
Severe pelvic pain
Chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder
Excessive sweating and general ill feeling
Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite
Dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
Less serious side effects may include:
Mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps
Breast pain, swelling, or tenderness
Dizziness;
Freckles or darkening of facial skin
Increased acne or hair growth
Weight changes
Vaginal itching or discharge
Skin itching or rash
Changes in your menstrual periods
Decreased sex drive
Mild headache

What should I avoid while taking Norethindrone Acetate?
Women, especially those over 35 years of age, should not smoke while taking Norethindrone Acetate, as this can increase the likelihood of dangerous side effects such as blood clots, strokes or heart attacks.
Does Norethindrone Acetate protect against sexually transmitted diseases?
Norethindrone Acetate does not protect against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases, it is only useful against pregnancy. You should be careful to protect yourself before you engage in intercourse in order to lower your risks of transmitting any of these diseases.
Can I take Norethindrone Acetate if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Norethindrone Acetate can pass into breast milk and harm an unborn baby. You should talk to your doctor before you take Norethindrone Acetate if you are currently breastfeeding a baby.
Norethindrone Acetate can also cause birth defects in unborn babies. You should inform your doctor if you think you have become pregnant while taking this medication or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
What is the recommended dosage of Norethindrone Acetate?
For the treatment of stopped menstrual cycles, Norethindrone Acetate should be taken once a day for 5-10 days during the second half of the menstrual cycle. Within 3-7 days after you stop taking this medication, withdrawal bleeding usually occurs.
How does Norethindrone Acetate work?
Norethindrone Acetate consists of a certain female hormone similar to progesterone - progestin. It works by stopping the normal growth of the uterus lining during the menstrual cycle and signaling hormone changes in the uterus to restore normal periods.
